About the Board

The Board of Trustees are appointed to a four-year term by the County of Riverside Board of Supervisors. If the Trustee is seeking re-appointment, the Trustee will send a letter of intent to the appointing Board Supervisor prior to the expiration of their term requesting re-appointment. If you are interested in becoming a Trustee for the Coachella Valley Public Cemetery District, please contact the Fourth District Supervisor’s office to express your interest (Supervisor Contact Link).

The major functions of the trustees is to set policy, define goals and objectives, adopt rules and regulations, and act as legal custodian for District property. The Board has employed a General Manager to carry out policy, direct District operations, provide day-to-today supervision of staff and control and administer District expenditures.

Marcos Coronel, Jr. - Trustee

Current Term June 30, 2021 through June 30, 2025

Trustee Marcos Coronel, Jr. Is a life-long resident of the Coachella Valley.  Trustee Coronel is dedicated to making his community a better place.  In addition to serving on the Cemetery District Board, he also volunteers as a Board Member for the Desert Recreation Foundation.  Professionally, he works for the County of Riverside. Trustee Coronel earned his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from California Baptist University.

Trustee Coronel was awarded his Special District Leadership Academy Certificate in February, 2018.

 

 

 

Bruce Underwood, Dr. P.H., C.N.S. - Trustee

Current Term January 2, 2023 until January 2, 2027

Trustee Bruce C. Underwood, Dr. P.H., C.N.S. is President of Healthy Futures and a preventive doctor, nutritionist who has dedicated his life to health and healing, while providing integrated lifestyle counseling in the areas of addictive behaviors, exercise, nutrition, and stress for the prevention and treatment of chronic and degenerative diseases. Dr. Underwood has been a resident of the Coachella Valley for more than 30 years.

Dr. Underwood earned his doctorate in preventive care and his second master’s degree in public health nutrition from Loma Linda University. He earned his first master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of Kansas – Lawrence campus. Dr. Underwood’s interest is in nutrition and exercise as it relates to adults. During the course of his career, he became the Executive Director of the Heart Institute of the Desert Foundation and served as Director of Fitness and Tennis at the Health & Racquet Club at PGA WEST. Dr. Underwood has served as preventive care professional with various fitness/medical/wellness facilities across the Coachella Valley.

Dr. Underwood was awarded his Special District Leadership Academy Certificate in July, 2019.

 

 

 

 

Ernesto Rosales - Board Chair

Current Term January 2, 2023 until January 2, 2027

A lifelong resident of the Coachella Valley, Chair Ernesto Rosales truly enjoys serving the community that has given him so much.  He has extensive experience in the funeral home, advanced planning, and cemetery operations and has served most of his career helping families through their most difficult times.

Chair Rosales is passionate about giving back to his community.  He has been involved with several organizations ranging from youth sports, arts to wellness. Two organizations very close to his heart are Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert where he serves as a Trustee and Mentor, and Ronald McDonald House, where he serves as Board Chair. His community service has also included the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce, City of Coachella Economic Development Committee, First Tee, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Sunrise Rotary, the Unforgettable’ s Foundation and the Dr Carreon Foundation.

Chair Rosales was elected to the California Association of Public Cemeteries Board of Directors in 2023, where he continues to serve.

 

 

 

 

John Rios - Trustee

Current Term January 2, 2023 until January 2, 2027

John Rios has served the Coachella Valley community for many years professionally as a CAL FIRE Battalion Chief.  In addition to his service on the Cemetery District Board, he also served as an elected member of the Coachella Valley Recreation and Park District (now known as the Desert Recreation District). Mr. Rios cares deeply about the cemetery and is a frequent visitor to the grounds.

Judy Vossler - Vice-Chair

Current Term January 1, 2024 through January 1, 2028

Vice Chair Judy Vossler is retired after a 40 year career in the Coachella Valley in hospitality, tourism and special event manager as general manager of La Quinta Hotel and tournament director of The Skins Game, Betty Ford Invitational Pro-Am, Frank Sinatra Celebrity Invitational and the Giddings Cup. Vossler retired from the Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau after seven years in management.

In retirement, Vice Chair Vossler continues years of community volunteerism including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coachella Valley, Desert Town Hall Lecture Series, La Quinta Historical Society, Modernism Week and Landmark Golf Company.

Vice Chair Vossler was awarded her Special District Leadership Academy Certificate in February, 2023.
